The National Student Writing Contest, sponsored by the Spanish Heritage Language Program at Florida State University, will accept submissions from high school and undergraduate students across the country. This year, the theme of the contest is “Growing Up Bilingual in the United States.”
The contest features three categories: poetry, essay, and fiction, and encourages original, creative work that reflects the voices and experiences of young bilingual writers.
Submissions are welcome in English, Spanish, or Spanglish, promoting both cultural and linguistic expression. All entries will be reviewed by a panel of judges, who will evaluate each piece based on creativity, storyline, and effective communication of the message.
This contest provides students with the opportunity to showcase their writing talent, gain national recognition, and engage with a broader literary community. Winning entries will be eligible for a $100 prize per winner.
All submissions must be sent as a Word document and must include the author's name, institution and level (high school or undergraduate), and category (poetry, essay, or fiction). Entries in each category are limited to 2,000 words. Only one submission will be accepted per author. A teacher or mentor can submit up to 3 pieces for consideration.
Please send submissions to 13nsshl2026@gmail.com and include “Writing Contest Submission” as the subject line of the email. The deadline to submit is December 5th, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. (CST).
